Sea Moss: What's in It and How to Make It Part of Your Day

Sea Moss has been part of Caribbean kitchens for generations. Here's what it is, what it contains, and the simplest ways to make it part of your day.

What is Sea Moss?

Sea Moss is a red seaweed that grows along rocky Atlantic coastlines. Ours is wildcrafted St. Lucian Sea Moss, gathered from the ocean, not grown in a pool.

Our Sea Moss Gel is made with wildcrafted Sea Moss, alkaline water and monk fruit, plus real fruit or spice in the flavored gels. Mossade, our Sea Moss lemonade, puts it in a ready-to-drink bottle.

What's in Sea Moss?

Sea Moss naturally contains 92+ minerals and trace nutrients, including iodine, magnesium, potassium and calcium. It's also a source of prebiotic fiber. Amounts vary from harvest to harvest, as they do with any whole food.

Why do people add it to their routine?

Because a small amount brings a lot along with it:

  • Minerals: 92+ minerals and trace nutrients your body draws on every day.
  • Digestion: the prebiotic fiber in Sea Moss helps support healthy digestion and regularity.
  • Skin: zinc and vitamin A help support skin health from within.
  • Zinc: Sea Moss contains zinc, a mineral that supports normal immune function.

Where does hydration fit in?

Water comes first. Your body also relies on minerals like potassium and magnesium to help maintain normal fluid balance, and those come from the food you eat. Sea Moss is one mineral-containing food you can add, and a chilled Mossade is an easy way to have it with a drink.

How do I take Sea Moss Gel?

One to two tablespoons a day. Take it straight from the jar, or stir it into a smoothie, tea, oatmeal or yogurt. Keep it refrigerated.

The routine works when it's easy. Keep a jar in the fridge and make it part of your morning.

Which flavor should I start with?

Start with Soursop or Pineapple if you like it bright and fruity. Cinnamon and Elderberry are warmer and deeper. Peach is soft and mellow, Matcha is earthy and smooth, and Regular is unflavored, so it disappears into anything. Every flavor has no added sugar. We sweeten with monk fruit.

What's the difference between wildcrafted and pool-grown Sea Moss?

Wildcrafted Sea Moss is harvested from the ocean, where it grows naturally. Pool-grown Sea Moss is farmed in tanks or pools. We use wildcrafted St. Lucian Sea Moss.

Is there anything to be mindful of?

Sea Moss naturally contains iodine. If you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or have questions about iodine in your diet, talk with your healthcare provider before adding Sea Moss to your routine.
